the drawing shed

The Brief

the drawing shed is a contemporary arts organisation established in 2009 and led by visual artists Sally Labern and Bobby Lloyd located on two housing estates in London E17.

The drawing shed approached us to build a community oven in the sunken garden on The Drive and Attlee Terrace estates E17. The oven was built and designed by local bakers and the local community.

The Outcomes

  • A team of bakers, trained by Toy Bakers, use the oven on a weekly basis to bake bread, the sale of which helps them raise funds to support targeted communities.
  • The rest of the time the oven is used by the community.
  • The project was able to attract funding from a variety of sources and gained support from local Waltham Forrest councillors.
  • Bakers also run Bake4theBlock sessions for local community on the estate.

The Technical

  • The oven was over 1m diameter set on reclaimed oak sleepers, with oak door. Materials were kindly donated by Osbourne.
  • Special thanks to the wonderful Osbourne team and their committed staff.
